GREAT
DICKENSIAN
SCAVENGER
HUNT
Go on a hunt for items around the
school and
complete the given tasks to understand the
Victorian world around you!
"I came here expecting an adventure,
and
prepared to go through with any.
ITEMS
Three different coins
- Scrooge and Marley worked in a counting house together and once Marley died,
Scrooge did not want to spare any of his change. To resemble Scrooge’s
stinginess find three different coins of different values.
“Darkness is cheap, and Scrooge liked
it.”
Four dead leaves - In
a growing industrialize civilization, nature began to decay and its beauty was
lost. To resemble the dying life find four dead leaves that symbolize each
season.
“The withering leaves no longer quiet,
hurried to and fro in search of shelter from its chill pursuit.”
A Letter- In chapter
10 of Martin Chuzzlewit, Mr Pecksniff goes to the post office multiple times to
exchange news with Old Martin Chuzzlewit. To represent the business between the
two gentlemen, find a letter.
An item to make a
screeching noise. In Martin Chuzzlewit, the Miss Pecksniffs are too innocent
and are described as being immature and annoying. To resemble their annoyance,
find an item you can make a screeching noise with.
“Neither of the Miss Pecksniffs could
repress an involuntary screech.”
TASKS
Reenact Jonas’ Paranoia. Jonas desired the death of
his father to inherit his money, after his father passed away, Jonas believed
he was the one responsible for the death when in fact he was not.
“And
he was not sorry for what he had done. He was frightened when he thought of it
– when did he not think of it.”
Take a picture of the school nurse holding a bottle
(water bottle). To represent the character of Sarah Gamp, an alcoholic midwife
nurse in the book of Martin Chuzzlewit.
“Mrs
Gamp can drink a glass of rum I dare say. Sit down Mrs Gamp, sit down.”
Take a picture of a musical instrument- Mark Tapley
is a very joyful character despite the gloominess around him. Musical
instruments symbolize the type of entertainment they had during the Victorian
era and the happiness that still endured.
“Mark
begins to be jolly under credible circumstances.”
Take
a picture looking out the window to represent the double entendre (double
meaning) of being a land surveyor. In the novel, Mr. Pecksniff is described
as being a “Land Surveyor,” however this can either mean a person who looks a
land to inherit or a person who literally just looks at land.
“In one sense, and only one, he may be
said to have been a Land Surveyor on a pretty large scale, as an extensive
prospect lay stretched out before the windows of his house.”
